TOP 10 REASONS TO BEGIN A YOGA PRACTICE:

  1. Stretches and lengthens the muscles, while gently stretching the soft tissues of the body. (Tendons, ligaments, and the fascia sheath that surrounds the muscles.)
  2. Releases lactic acid build up (Lactic acid can cause muscle soreness, stiffness, pain, and fatigue)
  3. Increases range of motion in the joints
  4. Increases muscle tone (From the larger ones to some of the smaller, less-used muscles)
  5. Improves balance and coordination
  6. Improves posture (Increases in strength, especially core strength, flexibility, and bodily awareness can lead to improvements in posture)
  7. Deep breathing improves respiration by expanding lung capacity and stress-management as the deep breath helps to initiate the body’s relaxation response
  8. Lowers levels of adrenaline, cortisol, and catecholamines (all responses to stress)
  9. Increases energy and vitality
  10. Relaxation- Deep and rewarding at the end to each session

BENEFITS of YOGA for CYCLISTS:

According to a wonderful article on this subject from USA Cycling’s website,

Kate Potvin shares the key reasons why cyclists should incorporate yoga into their routine.

Strength and Endurance:
One of the major benefits of a regular yoga practice is improved strength and endurance. Yoga help strengthen the places that get too weak when we spend too much time in the saddle.  Including our back, core, and upper body which can be underdeveloped in cyclists.

Flexibility:
Practicing Yoga leads to greater flexibility in the areas that are deeply impacted by the repetitive muscle movements associated with cycling including quads, tight hips, hamstrings, lower back and shoulders.

Focus:
Some of the non-physical aspects of yoga, such as mental focus and breathing, can be just as important to cyclists.  It might sound silly, but you really notice the benefits of breathing on the bike.
